Everything you need to know about learning to drive in the UK — from provisional licence to passing your test.
Getting Your Provisional Licence
Before you can drive on public roads or take your Theory Test, you need a provisional driving licence from DVLA (in Great Britain) or DVA (in Northern Ireland).
How to apply:
- Apply online at gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
- You can apply at 15 years 9 months
- You must be 17 to drive a car on public roads
- Cost: £34 online
- Arrives within 1–3 weeks
L Plate Rules
As a learner driver you must display red L plates (or D plates in Wales) on the front and rear of any vehicle you drive.
- L plates must be clearly visible to other road users
- Remove or cover L plates when a qualified driver uses the vehicle
- You must be accompanied by a qualified driver aged 21+ who has held a full licence for 3+ years
- You cannot drive on a motorway unless in a car with dual controls and an approved driving instructor (ADI)
- There is no minimum number of lessons or hours required in the UK
Taking the Theory Test
The Theory Test is the first formal step. You can book it as soon as you have your provisional licence. You do not need to complete driving lessons first.
