About the Scotland Theory Test

The Scotland Theory Test is administered by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). It is the first formal step towards obtaining a full UK driving licence.

The test consists of two parts taken in the same session:

  • Multiple choice questions: 50 questions — you must score at least 43 (86%) to pass.
  • Hazard perception: 14 video clips — you must score at least 44 out of 75 marks.

You must pass both parts on the same day. If you fail one part, you must retake the entire test.

Our practice tests cover the multiple choice section. Aim for 96% or above in practice to feel confident on test day.

5 Tips to Pass First Time

  1. Study the Highway Code thoroughly — all questions are based on it.
  2. Practice regularly on this site — aim for 96%+ before booking your test.
  3. Review every incorrect answer to understand why it's wrong.
  4. Practise hazard perception using the official DVSA materials.
  5. Book your test when you're consistently scoring above the pass mark.

Scotland Theory Test FAQs

The multiple choice questions and pass marks are identical across Great Britain. The key difference is Scotland's lower drink-drive limit: 50mg per 100ml of blood (vs 80mg in England/Wales). This is tested in the Scotland questions.

Scotland's drink-drive limit is 50mg per 100ml of blood — lower than England and Wales (80mg). This is equivalent to approximately 0.05% BAC. The safe advice is to not drink at all if you are driving.

The pass mark is 43 out of 50 (86%) for the multiple choice section, and 44 out of 75 for hazard perception. Both sections must be passed on the same day.
